He was born on July 8, 1989 and attended Huss High in Gastonia, NC. He went to Itawamba Community College out of high school, where he played both left and right tackle during his two seasons as a starter. He earned 1st team Mississippi Assoc. of Community and Junior Colleges honors as a freshman. He transferred to Southern Miss as a junior, where he started 6 of 13 games at left tackle. He would start all 14 games on the left side as a senior, while catching a two-point conversion. He would also earned 1st team All-Conference USA honors that year as well. He was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the third round (91st overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft.
