He was born on November 3, 1990 in Norfolk, VA where he attended Maury High. As a freshman at UVA, he played safety and appeared in 10 games mostly on special teams. He finished the year with six tackles. As a sophomore he moved to strong-side linebacker, where he started 11 of 12 games and led the team with 66 tackles. He also tallied seven tackles for loss, one sack and one forced fumble. As a junior he started all 13 games at weak-side linebacker, recording 88 tackles, eight tackles for loss, one pass defended and one fumble recovery. He started 10 games at weak-side linebacker during his senior season, missing a game and part of another with a hand injury. He recorded 90 tackles, 9.5 for loss, one sack and four passes defended that year on his way to earn honorable mention All-ACC honors. He was originally signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted rookie free agent following the 2013 NFL Draft.
