Marcus Lamar Jackson II was born on May 20, 1989 in Tyler, TX where he attended Lee High School. He enrolled at Navarro Junior College in Texas and served as a quarterback during his redshirt year. But he moved to wide receiver as a freshman, and caught 22 passes for 215 yards (9.8 avg) and rushed for 26 yards on 2 carries (13.0 avg). As a sophomore, he caught 17 passes for 268 yards (15.8 avg) and 4 touchdowns. He transferred to Lamar University the following year. He started 11 games, catching 41 passes for 727 yards (17.7 avg) and 8 touchdowns. He also returned 5 punts for a total of 122 yards (24.4 avg), including a 90-yard touchdown. As a senior, he caught 24 passes for 432 yards (18.0 avg) and 6 touchdowns, while starting 7 of 9 games. He also returned a single punt for -1 yards, but had 9 kickoff returns for 189 yards (21.0 avg) and a touchdown. For his career at Lamar, he also rushed 8 times for 12 yards (1.5 avg), and completing 1 of 6 passes for 62 yards and a touchdown. He earned All-Southland Conference honorable mention honors as a senior. He was originally signed by the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent in 2012.
