He was born on October 18, 1987 and graduated from Jupiter (FL) High School. As a redshirt freshman at Miami, he handled punt duties as well as kickoff duties late in the season. He finished the year averaging 40.2 yards on 58 punts with 9 placed inside the 20, 1 touchback, and 2 blocked. As a sophomore, he added place-kicking duties to his repertoire. He finished the year with 67 punts, 40.0 average, 19 inside the 20-yard line, 3 touchbacks, and 2 blocked. He also hit on all 40 of his PATS, and 18 of 20 field goals (90.0%) to earn 2nd team All-ACC honors both as a kicker and punter. He also was a semi-finalist for the Lou Groza Award, given to the nation's top kicker. As a junior, he punted 51 times for an average of 42.5 yards with 23 placed inside the 20 and 7 touchbacks. He also hit all 50 of his extra points, and 14 of 16 field goals (87.5%). He earned 2nd team All-ACC honors as a punter, and 1st team honors as a kicker. As a senior, he had 59 punts for an average of 44 yards, 19 placed inside the 20, and 6 touchbacks. He made 37 of 40 PATs, 13 of 17 field goals (76.5%) and earned 2nd team All-ACC honors as a punter. During that year, he had his best year kicking off, with 15 touchbacks on 67 kicks. He was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the sixth round (192nd overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft.
