Philip Gregory Wheeler was born on December 12, 1984 in Columbus, GA where he attended Shaw High School. He enrolled at Georgia Tech and played defensive end as a true freshman. He appeared in 12 games, recording six tackles. He redshirted the following year and made the move to outside linebacker. As a sophomore he started 11 of 12 games at weak-side linebacker, recording 64 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, four interceptions, four pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. He moved to middle linebacker as a junior, where he started all 14 games. He finished the year with 89 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, nine sacks, five pass breakups, one forced fumble and two recoveries on his way to earn second team All-ACC honors. As a senior he started all 13 games in the middle, recording 88 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, five pass breakups, one forced fumble and two recoveries as he again earned second team All-ACC honors. He was originally selected in the third round (93rd overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts.
