He was born on March 30, 1992 and graduated from Reynoldsburg (OH) High School. As a true freshman at Kent State, he started 1 of 12 games at defensive tackle and led the team with 20 tackles for loss and 10 sacks, while collecting 43 tackles, 2 pass breakups, 4 forced fumbles and 2 blocked kicks. He would earn Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Years, and the first of four 1st team All-MAC honors. As a sophomore, he started 12 games and finished the year with 39 tackles, 17 for loss, 4.5 sacks, 3 pass breakups, 3 forced fumbles, and a fumble return for touchdown. As a junior, he started all 14 games and had 59 tackles, 15 for loss, 6 sacks, 2 pass breakups, and 3 forced fumbles. As a senior, he started 10 of 11 games and had 41 tackles, 13 for loss, 3.5 sacks, 5 pass breakups, 2 forced fumbles and a blocked kick. He finished his career as the school's all-time leader in sacks (24) and tackles for loss (65). He was originally signed by the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent following the 2014 NFL Draft.
