Franklin D'Sean Weatherspoon was born on December 29, 1987 in Greenville, SC. He graduated from Jasper (TX) High before moving onto the University of Missouri. As a freshman, he played as a backup middle linebacker in 13 games. He finished the year with 17 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 blocked punt. He moved into the starting lineup at weakside linebacker the following year, and started 14 games, leading the team with 130 tackles. He also recorded 9.5 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, 8 pass breakups, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 recovery. He again led the team in tackles as a junior with 155 tackles in 14 starts. He also recorded 18.5 tackles for loss, 5 sacks, 3 interceptions which he returned for 100 yards including 2 scores, 7 pass breakups, and 2 forced fumbles. As a senior, in 13 starts, he led the team with 111 tackles. He recorded 14.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, 1 interception, 2 pass breakups, and 1 forced fumble. He earned 1st team All-Big 12 honors in all three years as a starter. As a junior, he earned 3rd team All-American honors and 2nd team honors as a senior. He was originally selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the 1st round (19th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft.

Contract details

signed a five-year $14 million deal that includes $10.4 million in guaranteed money. Incentives could increase the deal's worth to $17.4 million. He receives an initial signing bonus of $500,000 as well as a roster bonus of $965,000 paid in 2010.
