He was born on November 1, 1990 and graduated from La Joya (TX) High. As a redshirt freshman at West Texas A&M, he appeared in 11 games, connecting on 9 of 13 field goals and 56 of 57 extra points for 83 points. He also had 9 kickoffs for an average of 52.9 yards that year. As a sophomore, he once again appeared in 11 games, connecting on 9 of 13 field goals again and 49 of 50 extra points for 76 points. He also had one field goal blocked and had 6 kickoffs for an average of 64.2 yards and a pair of touchbacks. He was a first team All-Lone Star Conference honoree that season as well. As a junior, he played in 15 games, hitting 20 of 23 field goal tries and 69 of 70 extra points for 129 points. He would connect on his career-long field goal try of 56 yards and also had a single kickoff of 61 yards that as a junior. He would earn 1st team All-LSC honors for the second time as well as Division II All-American honors. As a senior, he played in 14 games, hitting on 24 of 30 field goal tries and 77 of 78 extra points for a career-high 149 points. He earned 1st team All-LSC honors for the third time, and was also named Division II All-American for the second time. As a senior, he was also honored with the Fred Mitchell Award, given to the nation's top kicker outside of the FBS sub-division. He finished his career as his school's all-time leader in field goals made (62) and also the NCAA's career leader in points (437). He was originally signed by the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent following the 2014 NFL Draft.
