He was born on May 22, 1986 in Baker, MT and attended Baker High. As a redshirt freshman, he appeared in 14 games with 14 tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss, and 1 interception. As a sophomore, he played in 12 games, finishing the year with 43 tackles, 1 for loss, 1 interception, 3 pass breakups, and 2 fumble recoveries. As a junior, he assumed the starting free safety spot in 16 games and finished with 108 tackles, 4.5 for loss, 4 interceptions, 10 breakups, 2 forced fumbles, and 2 recoveries earning 2nd team All-Big Sky conference honors. He started 15 games as a senior, finishing the year with 90 tackles, 2.5 for loss, 4 interceptions, 6 breakups, 1 forced fumble, and 1 recovery. He earned 1st team All-Big Sky honors. He was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the sixth round (171st overall) in the 2010 NFL Draft.
