Taylor Jonathan Yates was born on May 28, 1987 and attended Pope High in Marietta, GA. As a freshman at the University of North Carolina, he started 12 games, leading the Tar Heels to a 4-8 record. He completed 218 of 365 pass attempts (59.7%) for 2,655 yards, 14 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. As a sophomore, he started 6 of 7 games despite being sidelined with a fractured ankle for 5 games. He led his team to a 3-3 record as a starter, passing for 1,168 yards, 11 touchdowns, 4 interceptions while completing 81 of 135 attempts (60%). As a junior he started all 13 games, leading them to an 8-5 record. He completed 214 of 355 passes (60.3%) for 2,136 yards, 14 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. As a senior, he started all 13 games and led them to an 8-5 record once more. He completed 282 of 422 passes (66.8%) for 3,418 yards, 19 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. During his career at North Carolina, he also had 7 rushing touchdowns. He was selected by the Houston Texans in the fifth round (152nd overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft.
