He was born on October 3, 1993 in San Antonio, TX, where he graduated from Reagan High School. He enrolled at Oklahoma and as a redshirt freshman, he opened the season as the starting quarterback, although would eventually be supplanted by Blake Bell in that role. He would finish the year with five total starts in eight appearances, leading the Sooners to an undefeated record in those games. He totaled 819 passing yards, while completing 79 of 134 passes (59.0%) for nine touchdowns and five interceptions. He also added 445 yards on the ground and two more touchdowns. He started all 10 games he appeared in as a sophomore, missing three to a several neck stinger. The Sooners sported a 7-3 record in the games he started. He completed 179 of 316 passes (56.6%) for 2,300 yards, 14 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also rushed for 339 yards and five more touchdowns, while also adding a receiving touchdown on his lone four-yard catch. He was named a finalist for the Wuerffel Trophy, an academic honor and was a first-team Academic All-Big honoree as well. As a junior he served as a reserve in six games, completing just 22 of 40 passes (55.0%) for 305 yards, two scores and two picks. He also had 69 rushing yards and another touchdown on the ground. He transferred to Texas A&M upon graduation the following year and earned the starting job there. He started all 11 games during his senior season, pushing the Aggies to a 7-4 record. He missed two games due to an injured throwing shoulder. He finished the year completing 193 of 362 attempts (53.3%) for a career-high 2,432 yards, 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also rushed for 614 yards and added 10 touchdowns on the ground to complete the season. He was awarded the Wuerffel Trophy as a senior. Originally signed as an undrafted rookie by the Arizona Cardinals following the 2017 NFL Draft.
