Yawin Alexander Smallwood was born on December 25, 1991, and attended Doherty Memorial High in Worcester, MA. As a redshirt freshman, he started all 12 games at middle linebacker, finishing with 94 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 1 interception, 3 pass breakups, 1 forced fumble, and 2 fumble recoveries. He returned one of his fumble recoveries 64 yards for a touchdown. As a sophomore, he started all 12 games, finishing with 120 tackles, 15 for loss, 4 sacks, 4 pass breakups, 2 forced fumbles and 1 recovery. He would earn 1st team All-Big East honors that year. As a senior, he started all 12 games and earned All-AAC 1st team honors due to finishing year with 118 tackles, 9.5 for loss, 4 sacks, 1 interception returned 59 yards for a touchdown, 9 pass breakups, and 2 forced fumbles. He was also a semi-finalist for the Butkus Award, given to the nation's top linebacker. He declared early for the 2014 NFL Draft and was selected by Atlanta Falcons in the seventh round (253rd overall).
