The Atlanta Falcons announced today that running back Antone Smith is out for the remainder of the 2014 season with a broken leg while cornerback Robert Alford is expected to miss two to four weeks due to a wrist injury. Both injuries occurred during the Falcons win on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. Smith will be placed on injured reserve shortly.

Smith finishes the season with 144 rushing yards on 23 carries (6.3 avg) and two rushing touchdowns, along with 13 receptions for 222 yards (17.1 avg) and three receiving touchdowns. Smith appeared in all 10 games this year and his five offensive scores are currently tied for the team lead along with wide receiver Roddy White. He also added three stops on special teams and was recently named one of two captains of that unit along with wide receiver Eric Weems. Smith first joined the Falcons on their practice squad in 2009 before making the team’s roster in 2010. Since then, he has spent the bulk of his time with the team playing on special teams, appearing in 50 games and recording 23 special teams tackles from 2010-13. This season saw an increase in offensive playing time, having only carried or caught the ball a combined eight times in his four previous seasons. For his career, Smith has received a total of 44 offensive touches, yet has scored seven times.

Alford had started all 10 games at right cornerback for the team before suffering his injury early in the Panthers game. He was replaced in the game by reserve cornerback Robert McClain. In 2014, Alford has recorded 29 tackles and is tied for the team lead with three interceptions. His 11 pass deflections also are the most on the team. Alford was drafted by the Falcons in the second round of the 2013 draft. Last season, he appeared in every game and finished the year with 38 tackles, two interceptions and eight pass deflections while also starting the final four games.

The Falcons are expected to make roster moves in the coming days, which will likely involve bringing in free agents to work out for the team tomorrow. Also the team has running back Jerome Smith and cornerback Ricardo Allen currently on the practice squad. Smith was an undrafted rookie out of Syracuse, but received very limited playing time over the course of the preseason. He only played a total of 17 snaps over two preseason contests this summer. Allen was a fifth-round pick out of Purdue this past May, and recorded four tackles and a pair of pass deflections in four preseason games.
