Falcons add safety, cut corner

March 16th, 2010 Comments off

The Falcons announced two roster moves today, signing safety Matt Giordano and cutting cornerback Tye Hill. Giordano was cut earlier this month by the Green Bay Packers. Hill was acquired via trade from the St. Louis Rams this past summer but played sparingly during the course of the season.

Giordano appeared in 5 games with the Packers, playing mostly on special teams. Prior to this past season, Giordano spent four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts as a reserve safety but was cut by the Colts this past September before being picked up by the Packers. Giordano served primarily on special teams for the Colts, but did get opportunities in past years to fill in as a reserve strong safety in the absence of starter Bob Sanders.

Hill played in 8 games this past year, starting 3 of them after the Falcons sent a seventh round pick to the Rams on September 1.  The highlight of his season was in his second start against the Washington Redskins, he returned an interception 62 yards for a touchdown.

The Falcons announced today that they have acquired cornerback Tye Hill via trade from the St. Louis Rams. FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer reports that the Falcons sent a seventh round pick to the Rams in exchange for Hill.

Hill was a first round pick for the Rams in 2006. He started 21 games over the past three years, recording 4 interceptions and 105 tackles. Last season, Hill only started and played in 4 games due to injury, also missing 8 games in 2007. Reports indicate that HIll was on the verge of losing his starting job in St. Louis to Jonathan Wade.

The Falcons are looking for help at cornerback. The corners gave up some big plays on Saturday night’s preseason contest against the San Diego Chargers, causing the team to potentially look for more help. Rookie corner Chris Owens also injured his ankle in the contest.
