Pudge’s Power Rankings – Week 6

October 12th, 2006 Comments off

So my rankings last week were too crazy? Well tell that to my 12-2 record from Week 5. Well that makes 3 straight weeks where I’ve accurately predicted at least 70% of the winners. Not bad if I do say so myself, considering I didn’t really design these rankings to predict which teams will win week in and week out. I didn’t predict any blowouts last week, but there were 3 (Bears, Giants, and Jags all were considered blowout wins). There have been a total of 19 through the first 5 weeks, so even if another week comes up that I don’t see many blowouts, I think I’m still going to pick a minimum of 3 based on which trio will be the most likeliest.

Pudge’s Power Rankings – Week 5

October 5th, 2006 Comments off

This week, I adjusted the ratings to reflect a little bit more for where each team is in the statistical rankings. Previously, a lot of it was eye-balling, and based on a lot of expectations and carry-over from last year. Now we’re a month in, and I feel much more confident stating that even if a team finished 9th against the run last year, but is currently ranked 22nd, their run defense isn’t very good.

I’m sure many of you will look at some of these rankings, notice the huge climbs and falls for a few teams, and think I’m crazy. I probably am. It’s a formula. I trust it enough that I don’t try too much to bias it with my subjective point of view. We’ll see how it holds up in the weeks to come. This week I’ve decided to give you where each team scores offensively (OFF) and defensively (DEF). Remember that it’s not so reflected in the OFF and DEF grades, but moreso in the overall (OVR) grade that teams that run the ball well and stop the run have higher grades. It’s interesting to note that according to this, all 4 NFC East teams rank in the Top 5 offenses in the league.

Pudge’s Power Rankings – Week 4

September 28th, 2006 Comments off

Another week in the bag, and not much difference in terms of the predictions. Missed all 3 of my blowout predictions. You’ll notice that the power rankings look a little odd with the movement. That’s because this week I decided to adjust the schedule rating to reflect ease of schedule. I’m not sure if I’m going to do this every week, every other week, or at another interval. It’ll probably depend on how lazy I’m feeling given the week. The higher the rating for the schedule, the easier I perceive their competition to be. That’s why based on the overall grade (which roughly corresponds to overall talent or how they look “on paper”), the Falcons are the 8th best team, but factoring in what I view is the 4th hardest schedule in the league doesn’t bode well for their power ranking.

Pudge’s Power Rankings – Week 3

September 21st, 2006 3 comments

The world returned to its axis. It seemed my Week 2 performance was much better as far as predictions went. I went 10-6 this past week. 3 of the 4 predicted blowouts were, while only 2 of the remaining 10 managed to be blowouts as well. That brings my season record to 18-14, with 4 of 9 blowouts properly predicted, and missing 5 of 21.

This week’s predictions are:

Bills over Jets
Lions over Packers
Redskins over Texans*
Colts over Jaguars
Dolphins over Titans
Bears over Vikings
Bengals over Steelers
Panthers over Bucs
Ravens over Browns*
Cardinals over Rams
Eagles over 49ers*
Seahawks over Giants
Broncos over Patriots
Falcons over Saints

* indicate blowouts. A hint to you gamblers, I’m meaning that they should win by at least 17 pts or 14 pts if the opponent is held to single digits

Pudge’s Power Rankings – Week 2

September 14th, 2006 1 comment

For those curious how I did on my “predictions” last week based on the power rankings, I was an exceptional 8-8. Of the 5 games that I thought would be blowouts, only 1 was (Bears vs. Packers). Of the 11 other games that should not have been blowouts, 3 were (Falcons-Panthers, Bucs-Ravens, & Chargers-Raiders). Well, here we go again with another bout of predictions, although I must again warn that these rankings are not designed to predict which teams will have the best records, thus whether or not a team wins/loses individual games, but rather designed to predict which teams are in the best shape to win the Super Bowl. Based on Week 1′s results, I’m going to bet that by the end of the year, the overall record is going to be sub-.500.

Week 2 games:

Colts over Texans*
Saints over Packers
Bengals over Browns
Bears over Lions*
Ravens over Raiders*
Falcons over Bucs
Eagles over Giants
Panthers over Vikings*
Dolphins over Bills
Seahawks over Cardinals
Rams over 49ers
Chargers over Titans
Patriots over Jets
Broncos over Chiefs
Cowboys over Redskins
Steelers over Jaguars

* indicate expected blowouts

RNK TEAM OVR RTG PREV 1. Seahawks 7.47 7.47 - 2. Patriots 7.17 7.46 +2 3. Broncos 7.90 7.38 - 4. Bears 6.77 7.24 +3 5. Cowboys 8.07 7.15 +1 6. Pudge’s Power Rankings – Week 1

September 5th, 2006 Comments off

I’m at a point now where I trust the formula, and I simply just plug in the numbers. The results are just there. So it’s not homerism that governs why the Falcons overall grade has risen significantly (or at least I like to believe it is not) in the past month or so. Just the team has seemingly made strides in certain areas (particularly run defense) that make them a better team now than before.

But here are the rankings prior to Week 1. Although this rating system is not meant to predict wins and losses, if it does hold true based on that, then these teams should win in Week 1:

Steelers over Dolphins
Panthers over Falcons
Bucs over Ravens
Patriots over Bills
Broncos over Rams
Saints over Browns
Titans over Jets
Eagles over Titans*
Seahawks over Lions*
Bears over Packers*
Cowboys over Jaguars
Cardinals over 49ers*
Giants over Colts
Redskins over Vikings*
Chargers over Raiders

Asterisks (*) indicate the games that should be blowouts. Also you’ll notice that the Steelers are the only team that is weaker than their opponent, but still win. I based that on the difference in their overall grades being so small (0.13) and the fact the Steelers are playing at home. Of course, I’m not standing by these predictions, just saying that if my ranking system were designed to predict which teams would win, then it should go like that. But I’ll try to keep track of how well my ranking system performs as far as that goes. We might discover that at the end of the year, I did a better job of predicting W-Ls than which teams were actually going to the Super Bowl (which is what I tried to design this to indicate).

RNK TEAM OVR RTG PREV 1. Seahawks 7.47 7.48 +2 2. Panthers 8.27 7.39 +4 3. Broncos 7.90 7.38 -1 4. Patriots 6.97 7.31 -3 5. Pudge’s Power Rankings – August

August 30th, 2006 Comments off

Okay, so I’m tardy in my planned rankings by a week. Sue me. Well I have them now, and I still plan on updating these one more time to be posted early opening week.

As far as changes go, these are an attempt to reflect some of the issues, improvements, and disappointments teams have faced through three weeks of the preseason. Again, it’s the preseason, so we don’t put too much stock into it.

Pudge’s Power Rankings – July

July 25th, 2006 Comments off

The only moves that really made a difference in the ratings was the Chiefs picking up Ty Law and the outlook on Big Ben seems a bit rosier than it seemed a month ago. The rest of the charges are once again due to my further attempts to perfect the rating system. Next month, I’ll shoot for a mid-August power ranking and then one at the end of the month prior to the start of the regular season. And the hope is for the regular season, I’ll have these things updated and posted every Wednesday.

Just as a reminder in case this is the first opportunity that someone is looking at these rankings. These are not a judgement as to rank the 32 teams from best to worst, but more an effort to rank the ease of team’s paths to the Super Bowl. So if I had to categorize them based on the ratings, they would be:

7.50 or above Probable Super Bowl winner7.00 - 7.50 Possible Super Bowl challenger6.50 - 6.99 Super Bowl longshot6.00 - 6.49 Playoff contender5.50 - 5.99 Playoff longshot5.50 or under Possible No. 1 pick

Pudge’s Power Rankings – June

June 21st, 2006 Comments off

Here are the June power rankings. You’ll notice there are some significant changes for a few teams, which is not caused really by anything they’ve done or not done in the past month in terms of personnel moves (with exception to the Steelers), but rather based on me tweaking the formulas and tinkering with the numbers a little more. Hopefully, I won’t have to do that anymore, since I’m fairly confident again that these numbers work now. So that next month’s rankings will actually reflect more of what teams did or did not do in the past 30 days to improve.

Once again these rankings are supposed to reflect the ease of a team’s path to the Super Bowl, rather than to say who is and are the best team in the league. You’ll notice the three teams that changed the most were the Colts, Steelers, and Rams. The Colts and Rams improved significantly because I have a bit more confidence in the rushing abilities of Addai and Jackson this month, as opposed to last month. And the Steelers dropped because of lingering questions surrounding Big Ben’s health. I doubt we get an accurate prognosis of his health until August.

RNK TEAM OVR RTG PREV1. Broncos 8.27 7.64 +12. Chargers 7.73 7.58 -13. Patriots 7.33 7.58 +14. Seahawks 7.60 7.57 +15. Bears 7.20 7.55 -26. Pudge’s Power Rankings – May

May 23rd, 2006 Comments off

In light of the rankings published by Pete Prisco of CBS SportsLine, I’ve opted to try my hand at this thing people like to call “power rankings.” Mr. Prisco has the Falcons ranked something like 22nd in his rankings. They are so low because of his lack of confidence in Vick’s ability to lead a competent passing attack. Now I wouldn’t quite rate the Falcons as a Top 5 or 10 team, but a ranking of No. 22 basically indicates that in Mr. Prisco’s eyes, the Falcons would be lucky to make the playoffs this year. I sincerely disagree.

These do not rank teams from best to worst in the league in that strict a sense. It is rather a ranking system in order to illustrate which teams heading into the summer seemingly have the easiest paths to the Super Bowl. I believe that the Super Bowl reps this year will be two of the Top 6 teams. These ratings are determined by a teams’ offensive (OFF) and defensive (DEF) capabilities. The OVERALL is the most important determinant, and is a combination of offense, defensive, coaching, and special teams grades. But emphasis is placed on teams that run the football well and stop the run as well. Also these grades of these respective areas of the team are based on their performance in 2005, and reasonable improvements projected in 2006 based on the off-season changes. Also a team’s strength of schedule (SCHED) is a significant factor as well. The higher their schedule grade is the easier schedule they have. It’s not determined by last year’s wins and losses, but rather by the overall grades of this ranking system. The overall POWER RATING comes from factoring the Overall and Sched parts together. All these are based on a 10-point scale with 10 being the highest and 1 the lowest.

I’m hoping that until the season starts, I’ll be able to update this list about once a month. And then once the season begins, I could do it every week.
