Moneyball 2011 – Week 3 Review

September 27th, 2011 Comments off

The tale of this game is the failure of the Falcons offensive line. The Bucs pretty much dominated the line of scrimmage with their front four. Brian Price was a monster, and Adrian Clayborn and Gerald McCoy each made their shares of plays. Garrett Reynolds was the only positive earner mainly because I don’t deduct for multiple pressures given up, as he gave up three. I don’t know if the Falcons have ever had a game where basically all five of their blockers should have been in the red. Justin Blalock struggled against Price, after being far and away our best blocker in the first two outings. I gave him credit for a half-sack on Mason Foster’s sack in the third quarter, where McClure botched the snap. I gave McClure the other half credit because of that botched snap.

The ground game was non-existent mainly because the Falcons struggled to get any real push, but because of how sluggish a runner that Michael Turner looked in this game. Turner looked his age in this one, and if he’s going to continue to play as slow as he has this year, the Falcons are going to have to resort to new ways of manufacturing rushing yards, such as a lot of dink and dunk throws to Harry Douglas, Julio Jones, and Roddy White and try to get those guys in space. The team might also want to try and mix in Jacquizz Rodgers a lot more.

Matt Ryan put up some numbers thanks to some earnings when the Falcons went into no-huddle or the two-minute drill, but he did not have a good game. Ball security seems to be an issue in the pocket. If you’re wondering why he went to Jacquizz Rodgers instead of an open Tony Gonzalez on that fourth down play at the goalline that was broken up by Corey Lynch, it was because Gonzo was covered by Ronde Barber who had broken up two passes already on that drive, and had an outstanding game overall, Pro Bowl caliber. The Falcons receivers had good games with Roddy White and Julio Jones both doing some good things after the catch. I don’t know the exact number, but I think Jones had around 40 or more yards after the catch. Roddy’s 3 drops are a little disturbing, although I think fatigue had a lot to do with the last one where he was wide open near the goalline.

I think the Falcons could have done a better job on their play-call on 3rd & 15 just before they opted to kick the field goal down 6 points with 4 minutes left in the 4th quarter. They could have had a play that had a better checkdown for Ryan over the middle that would have allowed them to still get 7-8 yards to make it a much more manageable 4th down if they decided to go for it, instead of practically sending all 3 of their receivers into the endzone.

And what the heck has happened to Ovie Mughelli? Besides that TD grab vs. the Eagles (which was about as mundane as TD grabs get), he has been very very quiet this year.

Moneyball 2011 – Week 2 Review

September 20th, 2011 Comments off

The Falcons did not have their most stellar performance against the Eagles, but they made plays at critical points in the game to pull out the victory.

Offensively, Matt Ryan did not really get going until the fourth quarter, where he earned $7 of his $9.50 passing the ball. Michael Turner had a good start with $7 in the first half, but went quiet until his big runs late in the game. Tony Gonzalez was money in this game with his two touchdown grabs and ability to move the chains. Roddy White and Julio Jones were fairly quiet for most of the game, although they had some key catches at certain points in the game. But at least from the Eagles perspective, they should feel happy about their two highly paid corners containing both White and Jones pretty much the entire night.

Up front, the blocking was hit and miss just like last week. Sam Baker really struggled going against Trent Cole, which was the same issue he had a year ago. Reynolds gave up an early sack but had a fairly solid game the rest of the way. Clabo also struggled on the outside getting beat by Jason Babin several times. Blalock was the best up front, and Hawley had his really good moments as well as his share of mental errors and mistakes. If and when McClure returns, the Falcons can iron out many of the inconsistencies.

The Falcons inability to move the ball on the ground in the third quarter was a big reason why the Eagles were able to get back into the game and take a 10-point lead then.

Ryan saw a lot of pressure throughout the game from the edges, but some of it was on him getting happy feet in the pocket after he took a couple of early hits.

Moneyball 2011 – Week 1 Review

September 13th, 2011 Comments off

It was a tough game for the Falcons. Things started off pretty well for them defensively, but the offense was unable to get much going. It was not vintage Falcon football, which featured a lot of mental errors, sloppy tackling, and penalties. Throw in two turnovers, and you get how the Falcons were so handily beat by the Bears in the season opener.

Upon initial viewing, I did not think particularly much of Matt Ryan’s performance, but upon reviewing the game, he was not nearly as bad as I thought. He missed on some throws and his two turnovers were boneheaded mistakes. But other than that, he really did not have a bad game. You can certainly say those two mistakes were enough to merit this being a bad performance, and you won’t see much argument from me. But if he can eliminate those mistakes, the Falcons should be better. He did not get a lot of help from the blocking up front or his receivers. I counted five dropped passes in this game, and the Bears had little issues pressuring Ryan particularly late in the game.

For all intents and purposes, I thought Sam Baker actually did a decent job against Julius Peppers. Peppers had a pretty quiet game until he got pressure that caused Ryan’s fumble that went back for a score. After that point, Baker started to have some trouble because the Bears were able to pin their ears back up front. But all in all, considering some of the past performances Baker has had, and given the level of competition, I think he did a decent job against Peppers.

It was Henry Melton that terrorized Ryan most of the game. Thanks to mistakes mainly made by Garrett Reynolds, who had a really poor game. Joe Hawley and Tyson Clabo also contributed, and that inexperience on the interior and Melton’s stunting inside contributed to a lot of his pressures. That was a strength of Dahl and Clabo last year, which was defending the stunts. There was really no cohesion on the right side of that line.

I was disappointed to see that the Falcons did not attack one of my matchups which was Tim Jennings at left corner. The Falcons barely threw at Jennings until the end of the game, instead going after Charles Tillman much more through the first three quarters. Now, they were able to get two big plays against Tillman, but nonetheless, I thought it would have been very smart of the Falcons to really challenge Jennings all game long.

On the ground, Turner had a nice game, his fumble withstanding. The team was forced to abandon the run by the end of the third quarter. Hawley and Blalock were the main contributors there. I think Hawley has real potential as a run blocker, if this game is any indicator. He’s definitely not there yet, and needs more polish, but he flashed some of the potential to be a significant upgrade over McClure down the road.

Moneyball – Week 19 Review

January 22nd, 2011 Comments off

I avoided watching this game for a couple of days, and going through it again was kind of like what I imagine having teeth being pulled. I knew it had to be done, and I was dreading it this morning. But knew it was best to get it over with, and I was hurrying through it hoping it would be over quickly. And now I feel like I’m better for it, but there is still some lingering pain.

This game was lost in the second quarter. Too many mistakes and not enough plays were made there, and the Falcons gave up too much to the Packers, who were too good a team to give it back in the second half.

The Falcons took the 14-7 lead on Weems kickoff return score, and had the defense made a stop on the next drive then this game should have been a lot different. But then when they gave up another touchdown, allowing the Packers to tie the score, the Falcons had opportunity to push the lead further, but blew it with Ryan’s interception in the endzone.

On that drive, the false start by Harvey Dahl really hurt them as a 2nd & 9 became a 2nd & 14. Then the sack given on the next play where Ryan should have hit Douglas in the flat but held onto the ball too long led to the 3rd & 21. Then with the underthrow, and Jenkins slipping in the endzone, you basically had the same 14-point swing costing the Falcons this time, that essentially won them their previous matchup against the Packers. Then when the Falcons got the ball back later in the quarter, Dahl gave up a sack which forced them into the situation on 2nd & 19 with 10 seconds left to try and get back some yards to get a makeable field goal. Had that sack not been given up, the Falcons could have had an easy 43-yard field goal for Bryant to make. But another poor throw by Ryan led to the pick six.

The Falcons had opportunities to get back into the game in the third quarter, but the reversed call on the Jenkins catch pretty much killed any chance they had, leading to a punt instead of a first down. The missed opportunity on the onside kick also hurt them. Their chances of winning at that point were extremely low, but if they had gotten the onside and then scored, the game would have at least been more interesting down 14 points with most of the fourth quarter to play.

Ryan didn’t have a particularly bad game, but the few mistakes he did make were critical. The sack he took on the blitz, and the two interceptions on underthrown balls, and  then the botched snap in the third quarter were really the only mistakes he made. But they were huge ones. And had those been less consequential mistakes like poor throws, this could have been a very different game.

The running game was doing well early on, but the poor defensively play by the Falcons and their need to pass the ball practically every down from the second quarter on took Turner out of the game. Tony Gonzalez was a non-factor in this game, and I’m still not sure if it was because Charles Woodson & Co. did such an excellent job or just because Ryan wasn’t looking to him. It seemed like in past games that there would have been opportunities for Gonzo that Ryan would have forced in there. But I have the suspicion that for the most part, Ryan chose not to challenge Woodson out of fear and respect.

The blocking and pass protection were not particularly good. Surprisingly, Sam Baker was the lone Falcon blocker that did not get credited with giving up a sack. Relative to the rest of the unit, he had a good game. Clabo had his struggles early on, and Dahl and McClure had troubles adjusting on some stunts by Clay Matthews. Throw in Dahl’s penalties, and it was a very forgettable game for the front five.

Moneyball – Week 17 Review

January 6th, 2011 Comments off

A good year overall for the Falcons.Their play down the stretch was solid, and I definitely like their chances going forward.

Offensively, this was not a great performance for the Falcons. A fumble by Turner in the redzone, two failed fourth down conversions. They were able to move the ball at will vs. the Panthers for most of the game, but just didn’t finish a few drives. But they still managed 31 points, so there isn’t too much to complain about. Ryan had some inaccuracy issues early in the game, but overall had a strong performance. He was able to spread the ball to a bunch of receivers. As for the blocking, it was pretty good, but nothing special. Baker looked bad on a few plays. Blalock had a nice game. Hawley got his first extensive action but was just so-so in garbage time. I was a little disappointed with how inept the 2nd team offense looked in the fourth quarter, as it was a performance straight out of a preseason game. But hopefully we will never have that many backups on the field again, at least not until August.

Moneyball – Week 16 Review

January 4th, 2011 Comments off

I’m late with this review. I’ll blame the hectic holidays for the main reason why it’s being posted a week later than it should have been. But also I think I was slightly depressed to re-watch this game, so I procrastinated a bit over this past weekend.

Not a very good game for the Falcons offense. Ryan had an OK game, but he didn’t get a ton of help from the ground game, his receivers, or the blocking up front. Haven’t looked it up, but it seems like collectively this was one of the worst blocked games we’ve seen from the front five. Both tackles Baker and Clabo had their struggles all night, and Peelle didn’t contribute much out on the edge either. Turner was basically a non-factor for most of the night. White was blanketed for most of the second half, and while Jenkins had one of his better games, it wasn’t enough to overcome his absence. Gonzo was practically invisible after destroying the Saints in Week 3. The offense wasn’t clicking and it just seemed like their inability to get much of anything moving on the ground was the primary culprit. There were too many third and longs that the passing game had to convert, and guys weren’t stepping up there.

It’s been beaten to death on this site’s forum, and I’m sure many others over the past week, but Mike Smith should have went for it on the 4th & 6 with under 3 minutes to go. I won’t go into detail here, but I just wanted that to be on the record.

Moneyball – Week 15 Review

December 22nd, 2010 Comments off

Matt Ryan had another solid game. Not spectacular, but efficient, which is what you look for on the road. Michael Turner had a nice game on the ground, particularly getting better as the game started to wear on and the Seahawks defense wore down. Roddy White and Michael Jenkins both had good games. i think this might have been the first game that Tony Gonzalez did not earn anything as a receiver, but I guess he made up for it with a key block. The blocking was hit and miss. Dahl struggled. The Falcons had some issues with Raheem Brock stunting, as he was able to clobber Matt Ryan on two plays like that. Overall, offensively it wasn’t a standout performance, but they made the plays they needed to in order to win.

Moneyball – Week 14 Review

December 15th, 2010 Comments off

Not the greatest offensive performance from the Falcons, but they got the job done. Ryan wasn’t spectacular, but was able to spread the ball around to multiple receivers and the Falcons were able to get multiple players involved in the passing game. The offensive success was largely put on the back of Michael Turner, who had another strong performance. Because of that, blocking was mostly good, but was sloppy at times. McClure struggled a bit with some of the Panthers size inside, particularly Andre Neblett. But otherwise, he had one of his better games. Blalock had a nice game, and both Gonzalez and Jenkins contributed on the edge as blockers. Roddy had a pretty quiet game until the end where he had a couple of first down grabs.
